A new Bonelli eagle specimen has joined the emerging population of Mallorca, now recovered thanks to Life Bonelli, the project financed by the EU aiding one of the most menaced species in Europe.
The recovery of the Bonelli eagle population in the Comunidad de Madrid area involves the joint managing of interventions consisting in the liberation of specimen as well as interventions in the natural environment. Therefore, among the steps taken to reduce the mortality of the libererated birds as well as the wild ones, there is an undergoing assessment of the areas that highly affect this threatened specie due to electrocutions, one of the main causes of mortality. These measures are framed within LIFE Bonelli, the project financed by the EU helping the recovery of the spanish population, one of the most threatened prey species of Europe, in their historically dwelling territories.
On January 21, taking advantage of the last sun rays and in spite of the cold, our star couple of Bonelli eagle have laid their first egg of the season. Many eyes were expecting this moment, since the date when the first egg was laid the previous season was near. This couple has come ahead of time their lay considerably and this year wasn’t an execption.
As you can see in the picture, the Bonelli eagles Dante and Daimiel have been caught “carrioning” together. The pic was taken at a through for red kites in the Parque Natura de la Península del Llevant. Precisely, this protected area of the northeast of Mallorca was selected for the liberation of these two specimen in 2014 in the context of the re-introduction promoted by the LIFE Bonelli project.
The count down has begun for this young female eagle. She comes from the Centro de Recuperación de Especies Amenazadas (CREA) in Granada and her rehabilitation has continued in GREFA, where her flying abilities and bodybuilding have improved considerably, reaching the optimal point.
